Parent and Professional Programs

The programs below are appropriate for parent groups and other adult community group.

Our Prevention/Education Department will also create programs based on the needs of the community.

PERSONAL SAFETY FOR CHILDREN

This is a program designed for educators and parents who are looking for some concrete ways to talk to their children or students about general safety, "stranger danger" and uncomfortable touches. This program incorporates current statistics, best practices for child safety and a discussion of the kinds of "lures" or tempting tricks someone may use to hurt a child. A list of suggested activities for parents is provided. Internet safety tips and popular Internet applications such as, Facebook and Twitter are also included. This program is not appropriate for children.

*A Personal Safety for Adults program is also available.

CRIME AND ITS IMPACT

This introductory program aims to provide participants with a general understanding of the impact of crime, not only on the individuals involved, but also on the community as a whole. The discussion revolves mostly around questions from participants and case histories. This program may include a video that tells the story of a funeral director who sees the impact of homicide on people all around her.

THE THREE TYPES OF ABUSE

This program outlines physical, emotional and sexual abuse. Discussion will address that while bruises or wounds may not be visible, a person may still be the victim of abuse. The fact that abuse can occur in any type of relationship: romantic, familial, or platonic, is also an integral part of the program. We stress that every person, regardless of their ethnicity, age or economic status deserves to be treated with respect by others.

MANDATED REPORTING

Mandated reporters play a vital role in identifying and preventing child abuse.  During this training, provides professionals working with children the knowledge and skills to report suspected child abuse and to sensitively handle a disclosure of abuse.  This research-based and evidence-based training (available in 2 and 3-hour formats) fulfills the PA Department of Education ACT 126 Mandatory Reporter Training Requirements for educators.

IDENTITY THEFT

Identity Theft, or financial crime, is one of the fastest growing crimes in the United States, with 500,000 to 700,000 victims each year. Myths and facts regarding identity theft and scams are presented through interactive discussions and quiz questions. Ways individuals can reduce their risk of being a victim and what to do if someone has been the victim are discussed in this program.

INTERNET SAFETY AND CYBER-BULLYING

This is a program designed for parents, guardians, and other adults to ensure the safety of children and their well-being in the cyber world. CVC will incorporate current information on tech usage, best practices for child safety and discussions on current popular internet applications. This program looks at the ways youth use their devices, how adults teach them to use them, and what communities can do collaboratively to make this usage safer for everyone.

BULLYING: WHAT PARENTS CAN DO

Each day, 160,000 children stay home from school because of bullying and harassment. Yet, nearly half of all parents believe that these issues do not affect their children. This program is designed to raise awareness of the presence of bullying in our schools, as well as the effects on the students. Statistics and an informational video are presented to parents to illustrate these ideas. Strategies for adults and children are also discussed to enable parents to assist their children.
